Light takes first, Mayhew sets school record at Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Keri Light took first place in the women’s 1500 meter run, Ashley Mayhew set a new Tech record in the hammer throw, and a total of four Tech athletes had top five finishes at the Asics Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina on Friday and Saturday.

Light won the 1500 with a time of 4.43:36, Mayhew earned second in the shot put with a distance of 41-feet 3.25 inches, Katherine Lynn placed fifth in the high jump, jumping 5-feet 1 inch, and Rachel Forbes finished fifth in the javelin throw, with a distance of 102 feet 6 inches.

Mayhew’s hammer throw of 131-feet 7.5 inches broke the former Tech record of 129-feet 2 inches held by Casey Stinson since 2003. The toss was good for sixth place in the event. Mayhew also finished second in shot put with a throw of 12.25 feet and took in eighth place in the discus throw, with a distance of 112.5 feet.

Light also took seventh place in the 800 meter run, finishing in 2:21.04. Emily Weintzetl came two seconds shy of the school record 58.91 in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.91, earning 21st place.

Leayn Carter took sixth place in the triple jump, with a distance of 35-feet 9.5 inches, flirting with Lauren Addie’s Tech record of 36-feet 8.25 inches.

Also placing in the top ten for the Golden Eagles was Tiffany Palmer, whose time of 19:05.27 in the 5000 meter run earned her eighth place. Ashley Evans finished 11th in the event with a time of 19:21.70

In preliminary heats Ifeyinwa Eguzo ran the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.36, and finished the 200 meter dash in 27.27. Danielle Catlett finished just behind her at 27.88.

Tech will also compete in the TSU invitational in Nashville on April 11 and at the Murray State Invitational on April 18 before the OVC championships on May 1-2 in Richmond, Ky.
