Golden Eagle track team fourth at Sewanee Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Tennessee had two first-place finishes, three seconds and two thirds, and posted five personal best marks Saturday on the way to claiming fourth place among the 13 teams competing at the Sewanee Invitational Indoor Track & Field Meet.

Troy won the day with 135 points, followed by Samford (94), South Alabama (76) and Tech 67). Trailing Tech was Emory (39.5), followed by Bethel (18), Mississippi College (16.5), Berry (8) and Sewanee (1). Four other teams had entries but failed to score any team points.

Freshman Emily Weinzetl captured the first win of the day for coach Tony Cox’ team, winning the 400-meter dash in 1:03.07. The other first place effort came in the day’s longest individual race, the 3,000-meter run, where senior Stephanie Place won with a time of 10:19.46.

Senior Keri Light claimed a second place finish in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:22.79. A short time later, Light earned third place in the mile run in 5:18.68.

In the shot put, sophomore Ashley Mayhew earned second place with a toss of 40-feet, 8.25 inches.

Tech’s other high finishes came in the two relay events. The distance medley relay foursome placed second in 13:03.71, while the 4x400 relay squad took third place in 4:20.48.

Freshmen Rebecca Forbes and Traci Jones each established two new personal-best marks, while Carter had one personal-best. Jones recorded her new best marks in the 800m and mile, while Forbes had her new bests in the shot put and weight throw. Carter set a new personal mark in the triple jump.

Tech had a handful of other top 10 finishes. Among them: Ifeyinwa Eguzo placed eight in the 200-meter dash; Leayn Carter was sixth and Danielle Catlett seventh in the 400-meter dash; Traci Jones was 10th in the 800-meter run; Tiffany Palmer was eighth in the mile; Jenna Philpott was ninth and Leayn Carter 10th in the long jump; Carter was fourth and Philpott fifth in the triple jump; Mayhew was sixth in the weight throw; Sarah Smith was sixth and Sarah Kmet seventh in the high jump; and Rachel Forbes finished eighth in the pole vault.

The meet at Sewanee was the team’s final action until the OVC Indoor Championships, Feb. 27-28.
