School record, 10 personal best marks set by women's track team

MURRAY, Ky. – A school record in the 4x100 relay and 10 personal best marks highlighted the efforts by the Tennessee Tech women’s track team Saturday at the Murray State Invitational. Coach Tony Cox saw his team take five first-place finishes and capture second in six events.

In addition, Tech runners won all three of the men’s events.

“It was a pretty good day,” said Cox. “It was a small meet, but we ran well. This will be an excellent confidence builder for us for the conference meet coming up in a couple weeks.”

The Golden Eagles got the meet started with a school record in the 4x100 relay. Meagan Lyons, Allison Price, Emily Weinzetl and Ifey Eguzo raced covered the loop in the time of 48.90 seconds, eclipsing the previous mark of 49.45 seconds set six years ago.

Sophomore Ashley Mayhew had a personal best in the shot put by nearly two feet, coming up just a foot shy of another school record with a toss of 43 feet, 2.25 inches.

Lyons and Price, who joined the track & field team after completing four seasons on the Golden Eagle women’s basketball team, each came close to breaking school records, as well.

Lyons raced to first place in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.02 seconds, just off the school record time of 14.85 seconds. In the 400-meter dash, Price finished sixth in the time of 1:00.56, just slightly off the school mark of 58.91 seconds.

In addition to the first-place finishes by Lyons and the 4x100 relay foursome, Tech claimed the top finish by Rachel Forbes in the javelin, Leayn Carter with a personal best in the long jump and Tiffany Palmer with a personal best in the 5,000-meter run.

“Tiffany is running really strong right now,” Cox said. With her time of 18:16.15, she becomes the third-fastest in school history at that distance.

Second-place finishes came from Keri Light in the 1,500- and 800-meter runs, Rebecca Forbes with a personal best in the javelin, Jenna Philpott with a personal best in the long jump, Carter in the triple jump and Katherine Lynn with a personal best in the high jump.

Other personal bests came from Danielle Catlett in the 400, Rebecca Forbes in the discus, and Lyons in the high jump.

In men’s competition, Sam Taylor won both the 1,500- and 800-meter runs, and took third behind two teammates in the 3,000-meter run. In that race, Peter Woerner was first and Joseph DeLorenzo placed second.

Tech’s next event is the Ohio Valley Conference championships, May 1-2, at Eastern Kentucky.
