EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The Tennessee Tech softball team found itself on the short end of some close games Saturday as it lost a pair of games to SIU Edwardsville by the scores of 2-0 and 4-3.
Game one of today's doubleheader saw Tech take a 2-0 loss to the Cougars, as both teams combined for 10 hits and two walks.
TTU's Claudia Harke and SIUE's Erika Taylor cruised through the first five innings, as neither team was able to get that first run across the plate.
The Cougars finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth as the Cougars opened the inning with double and added a walk to put two on with one out. The Golden Eagles lifted Harke, for Whitney Cummings.
Cummings managed to get the second out on a strikeout, but an RBI single off the bat of Chelsea Yankolovich and a TTU fielding error allowed a pair of runs to score.
TTU then went 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh as Taylor earned her 12th victory of the season. Harke took the loss as she fell to 0-4 on the season.
Game two featured another early pitcher's duel as TTU's Holly Thomas and SIUE's Ali Downing kept both teams off the scoreboard through three.
The Golden Eagles would strike first in the top of the fourth as they strung together three hits, including a two-run double from Thomas, to take a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars responded with their own three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up at three.
SIUE's momentum carried over into the bottom of the seventh as the Cougars loaded the base with nobody out. Cummings later walked in the winning run, as SIUE took the 4-3 victory.
Cummings took the loss, falling to 5-7, while SIUE's Lindsay Coleman earned the win as she improved to 4-1.
Tech (15-17, 6-10 OVC) wraps up its three-game series with SIUE Sunday, at 1 p.m.
