Zdroik, Thomas named to Phyllis Rafter Memorial All-Tournament Team
KENNESAW, Ga. - Junior Anna Zdroik and sophomore Holly Thomas helped the Tennessee Tech softball team finish strong at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament last weekend and were both recognized on the All-Tournament Team.
Zdroik made the most of her six plate appearances as she knocked in four runs on two hits in crucial situations. Against Alabama State, the Rosholt, Wis., native made her first start of the season and delivered with RBIs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to help Tech jump out to a 5-0 lead.
She came off the bench against Kennesaw State and roped a pinch-hit double in the right-center field gap as part of a four-run 5th inning that led to the Golden Eagle run-ruling the host team.
Zdroik is hitting .333 and slugging a team-best .500 through the team's first five games.
In the circle, Thomas had a rough start against Ball State in the season opener, but she bounced back with back-to-back complete game victories.
Against Alabama State, Thomas struck out 10 and allowed just two hits as she recorded her first shutout of the season. She pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just four baserunners as she kept the Alabama hitters off balance all game and induced eight ground outs.
Thomas had another solid showing Sunday as the Golden Eagles won its second straight game with a convincing 9-1 victory over host Kennesaw State. The Ooltewah, Tenn., native pitched all five innings and allowed just one run on four hits to get the victory over the Owls. She walked three and struck out six in the game, shortened to five innings due to the 8-run rule.
Through three starts, Thomas has a 2-1 record and 2.19 earned run average with 20 strikeouts in just 16.0 innings of work.
Zdroik, Thomas and the Golden Eagles were originally scheduled to return to action on Wednesday in a doubleheader against Middle Tennessee State, but those games have been postponed. Tech will travel to Chattanooga this weekend for the three-day Frost Classic.
