ELON, N.C. -- The Tech men's tennis team is back on the road this weekend to join 13 schools in the Elon Invitational. Match play begins with singles play at 10:00 a.m on Friday, Oct. 8.
Tech will be competing against players from Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Duke, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Longwood, Tennessee (currently ranked number two in the nation) Radford, Presbryterian, Winston-Salem State and UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington.
Head Coach, Kenny Doyle and Assistant Coach Roberto Bloise will be alongside players, Alex Chen, James Crawford, Justin Kirstein and Josh Girling.
This will be Tech's fifth tournament this fall season, with the last weekend spent at the UTC Fall Classic in Chatanooga.
Girling, who took the last weekend off, will be coming from a succesful run of tournaments this fall, including his singles championship in the second flight of the Indiana Invitational and the 6-3, 6-0 victory over number 72-ranked Christian Blocker of Miami at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship. This success this fall earned Girling the third-seed spot in the first singles flight. Girling will start singles play at 2:00 p.m tomorrow, and will team with Crawford for doubles play at 5:00 p.m Friday.
Crawford, who is returning after a third-flight doubles championship last weekend in the UTC Fall Classic, will strive to continue his streak in his doubles play with Girling, as well as his singles play beginning at 1:30 p.m tomorrow. Crawford will represent Tech in Flight C.
Kirstein and Chen will be teamed together for B1 doubles play Friday evening at 5:00. Both players have competed in most of the fall tournaments and have had success in both their doubles and singles play. Kirstein is set to begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m in Flight A2 singles, and Chen begins play 12:00 p.m Friday.
