Tech finishes eighth in OVC Men's Golf Tournament

DICKSON, Tenn. -- For the third straight day, a different combination of players counted toward Tennessee Tech's team score as the Golden Eagles wrapped up the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championships in eighth place.

Jacksonville State barely held on for the team title, edging Austin Peay by one stroke for the crown. The Gamecocks closed play with a 290 total on Saturday to finish at 861 for the 54-hole event. APSU closed the gap with a final 287, coming up one shot shy with an 862 total. Murray State had the low round of the final day at 285, and pulled to within five shots of the lead while finishing third at 866.

Eastern Kentucky's 871 placed the Colonels fourth, followed by Tennessee-Martin (874), Eastern Illinois (887), Morehead State (889), Tech (910) and Tennessee State (911). The Tigers closed with a strong 296 Saturday to creep within one shot of the Golden Eagles.

Austin Peay's Anthony Bradley, the first round leader after a 66 on Thursday, held on to win medalist honors with subsequent rounds of 71 and 73, finishing at 210 to capture the title. David Lawrence of Eastern Illinois and Patrick Newcomb of Murray State tied for second at 213, while three players tied for fourth at 214.

Tech sophomore Mason Griffin, who opened the day tied for fourth after carding a three-under 69 on Friday, fell out of contention with a 82 on Saturday. He finished in a tie for 27th place at 225.

Senior Tyler Cassetty, whose score of 81 wasn't included on Thursday, regrouped to shoot 77 on Friday and finish with a even-par 72 to place second on the team and 33rd in the tournament at 230. One shot back was sophomore Greg Kitts at 231, who shot rounds of 73-79-79.

Junior Lee Maxwell finished 39th with scores of 79-75-79--233, while senior Travis Ramsey came back from an 80 Friday to shoot a 75 Saturday and finish 40th overall at 234.
