Golden Eagles place eighth as a team
MURRAY, Ky. — Tyler Cassetty fired his second below-par round of the week to finish in a tie for third in a 75-golfer field at the MSU Invitational Tuesday.
Cassetty, a senior from Whitleyville, Tenn., followed up Monday's first-round 67 with a two-under 69 to lead Tennessee Tech in Tuesday's final round at Miller Memorial Golf Course. Cassetty's cumulative score for the tournament was 67-73-69=209.
He finished in a tie with Union University's Brett Barry, coming in just two strokes off second-place Blanton Farmer (Lipscomb) and four strokes off the pace set by first-place Patrick Newcomb (Murray State). Cassetty shot three-under on par-fives and two-under on par-fours and finished with 40 pars.
Cassetty's impressive tournament helped the Golden Eagles to an eighth-place team finish out of 13 squads at the event. Tennessee Tech shot its best round in the first round, firing a 286, then posting 298s in the second and third round to finish at 882.
Sophomore Mason Griffin was the top Golden Eagle finisher behind Cassetty, turning in a final score of 75-72-74=221 to place in a tie for 25th. Sophomore Greg Kitts was the third Tech golfer with a score of 71-78-76=225 and senior Travis Ramsey was fourth at 73-80-79=232. Junior Lee Maxwell rounded out the Golden Eagle five, shooting 80-75-87=242.
Host Murray State won the event after making up a three-stroke deficit in the final round to finish even par at 285-287-280=852. Lipscomb finished five strokes back at 857, while Belmont came in third at 866, UT Martin was fourth at 869 and Morehead State was fifth at 871.
Tennessee State (876), Missouri Baptist (879), Tennessee Tech (882), Kentucky Wesleyan (885), Union University (891), Lewis University (902), UT Martin B (906), Brescia University (919) and Murray State B (919) rounded out the field.
Miller Memorial played to a yardage of 6,592 and a par of 71.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Oct. 10-11 at the Skyhawk Classic hosted by UT Martin at Paris Landing State Park.
