CHOCTAW, Miss. -- Golden Eagle senior Josh Simer sits atop the
leaderboard after firing a one-under 71 Sunday in the opening round
of the Frito Lay-AT&T Invitational at the Dancing Rabbit
As a team, Tennessee Tech is in eighth place in the 13-team field with a team score of 318, but the Golden Eagles are just six strokes off the pace set by tourney co-leaders Union Universtity and Jackson State at 312.
Lipscomb is in third place at 313, McNeese is next at 314 and Florida A&M rounds out the top five at 315 in what is shaping us as a really tight battle in Monday's final round. The second five includes Mississippi College (316), Lambuth (317), Tech (318), UT Martin (326) and Savannah State (354).
Simer was one-under at the turn with a 35 and covered the back nine at even-par to finish with a 71. It puts him three shots ahead of two golfers who are tied at 74 in second place.
Senior Jake Heatherly carded a 79 Sunday and is in 16th place, Tech's next best score heading into Monday's play. Preston Marshall is tied for 32nd at 83, followed by Blake Garrison at 85 and Wes Korth at 91.
Individually, the Golden Eagles have one player in the field. Travis Ramsey shot an 80 Sunday and is tied for 23rd place.
