Setting the Stage
The Golden Eagles take on the Buccaneers in an 83-year long in-state rivalry. While they haven't played each other every season, the teams have still combined to meet over 60 times over the years, with ETSU owning a 34-32 advantage.
The Buccaneers have owned the series of late, winning eight of the last 10 match-ups. The Golden Eagles won the most recent meeting, an 83-74 victory in Cookeville that ended a six-game winning streak in the series by ETSU.
East Tennessee State has played just one game this season, an 18-point loss to Virginia Tech. Tech has started the season 2-0 for the first time since 2008-09, with wins over Crowley's Ridge and Coastal Carolina.
Tech has been paced this season by the spectacular play of senior guard and preseason all-OVC selection Jud Dillard. The Atlanta, Ga. native gathered 25 points in a 75-point drubbing of Crowley's Ridge in the season opener, while adding 9 rebounds. He then followed that up with a career-high 34 points to guide the Golden Eagles to a tight two-point victory over Coastal Carolina. He also recorded 12 rebounds in the game to lead the team and notch his first double-double of the season.
ETSU was led by redshirt freshman Lester Wilson in its season opener. He scored a team-high 20 points off the bench while adding nine rebounds in an impressive 27 minutes of play. Wilson went 3-6 from behind the arc, but only managed to make one of six from the charity stripe.
