COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Will Barnes hit one free throw with
six seconds left to give the Tennessee Tech men's basketball team a
one point lead, and the Golden Eagles held on to claim a 69-68
non-conference win over Southern Utah as senior Daniel Northern
blocked a last-ditch shot by the Thunderbirds to preserve the
margin.
Northern's fourth block of the night thwarted the Thunderbirds
(1-2), who had covered the length of the court before the
buzzer.
Tech (3-0) remained the lone unbeaten team in the Ohio Valley
Conference, with a game coming up Monday night in Eblen Center
against East Tennessee State at 7:30 p.m.
Things started out slowly for the Golden Eagles as Southern Utah
was able to build up an early 7-0 lead, and the Thunderbirds took a
32-26 advantage into halftime.
However, the Golden Eagles hit 15-of-27 second-half shots, and
outscored SUU 43-36 in the final 20 minutes to claim the one-point
win.
The Golden Eagles had three players score in double figures, led by
Northern with 15 points, while junior DJ Lindsey scored 11 and
sophomore Alex Davis added 10 with the help of a 2-for-4 shooting
performance from 3-point range.
Southern Utah had a 41-33 edge in rebounds, with Tyler Quinney
leading the way with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double. Eules
Thompson scored 18 and Davis Baker had 16 for the visitors.
